Lithium Aspartate in the Treatment of Bipolar Disorder

November 25th, 2009 by admin

Lithium aspartate can be used in the treatment of Bipolar Disorder, although the approved treatment is lithium carbonate. Also referred to as manic depressive disorder and bipolar affective disorder, this is a diagnosis that describes a form of mood disorder. The pharmaceutical treatment is lithium carbonate, and is the only bipolar treatment known to reduce incidences of suicide among those affected. However, it is the lithium ion that is effective in helping to reduce the effects of this mood disorder, and does the salt that carries the lithium really matter?

Evidence would suggest not, since lithium aspartate, in addition to being used to treat hyperthyroidism, can also be used to regulate mood swings due to its effect on the neurotransmitter serotonin. The same argument also applies to the lithium salt of the heterocyclic carboxylic acid orotic acid. Both lithium orotate and lithium aspartate are believed to have beneficial effects on those that suffer from Bipolar Disorder, and both are over the counter medications as opposed to the prescription carbonate.

Over the counter lithium is available at your local or internet health food store in capsule form.  Lithium comes in 5 milligram capsules in name brands like Solaray.  Always purchase a name brand to ensure quality and purity of the lithium you purchase.
