Understanding Thai culture - Showing respect

This one concept is rather too different in both the western and Thai culture. For instance in the west privacy is respected and people are allowed their personal space and people generally speaking are less bothering when it comes to dealing with. However this just does not apply when you are in Thailand. Respect is synonymous with showing Naam jai or generosity, which invariably ends up meaning that privacy and your own space are out of the window. Don’t worry if that happens though. Sharing is a great way to show respect and this is why people here are always relaxed and calm; they have nothing to hide from one another.
